When is sponsorship good?
Sponsorship is good in the right situation. Some developers already have the pleasure of sites with good traffic and revenue so sponsorship isn't their best opportunity. Some create games that become popular and build popular sites from that. Some simply want to sell their games for site licenses to various portals. Others don't have a hit site, don't want to bother, or just want to make games so for them sponsorship is a great opportunity to make solid money fast.
What games are good?
A major trick with web games is there is a virtual avalanche of new content so your game must stand above the crowd or it will sink fast. Meanwhile the sponsor who invested in your game is hoping it will become popular enough that they at least make their investment back.
It's funny what web gamers want. We thought our internally developed Midnight Strike would become a smash hit but it only did modestly ok. The fact it was pretty complex compared to your typical Flash game and had 20 levels meant little. Meanwhile relatively simple or even “stupid” games can become very popular. Lesson: "good" is in the eye of the beholder and complex is often overkill.
Tips for seeking sponsorship
Contact all the various available sponsors to see who will give you the best deal. The various sites have their various tastes so bids can vary. Don’t be afraid to negotiate. Your game may be what everyone wants and you may draw good bids, or it may not catch anyone’s eye. Obviously if you have a good track record your chances are better.
If you are making a fairly complex game that will take a good number of hours to complete I would show around a decent enough prototype to see how much interest you can generate and gauge how much time you should continue to invest.
Be flexible. Be willing to make adjustments such as adding logos and so forth. The sponsor will probably have a lot of games under their belt so they may also have some good feedback to improve your game. The sponsor must also be flexible as some developers crave feedback while others absolutely despise it.
Why sponsor with ArcadeTown?
ArcadeTown is good option as we have solid budgets available plus the developer retains full ownership rights. We require only an exclusive on sponsorship. You keep all prizes your games win (Newgrounds, etc) and you can still sell site licenses to others to earn additional revenue.
